Frankenbok Live

A couple of weeks ago I got an invite to watch Frankenbok live at the Cherry Bar in Melbourne.

Firstly, The Cherry Bar should change it's name to "Stinking, Sticky, Shit Hole", once upon time there used to be carpet in there, by the look of it but it has slowly morphed into lino due to years of drunken abuse!!

We arrived and met most of the band, who were as cool as shit and impressed that I was wearing my DepriVation shirt, then we sat back and watch theother bands whilst knocking back a few beers.

The line up was.............interesting............not what I was expecting, the first band we seen was a funky, groove band with a female singer then a hardcore punk/heavy rock band (Empra) who were really good and the singer dedicated a song to his mum, who was in the crowd, which was a nice touch. Then the mighty "Bok" came on (more later), followed by an all Asian rock (I guess) bands.

The cool part was watching the different people come and going from the floor, some dancing some banging but all having a good time.

Now, the cool part about the Cherry Bar is that it is quite a small space, long and narrow, so the sound is brutal up close and cool and mellow at the back.

We sat up close, off to the side to get a good look at the band and to hear the brutality of the live show.

The guys played like there was no tomorrow! showing their obvious live pedigree and adding a little humour as well.

If you like bands that are no compromise, no bull shit just straight up metal bands that can actually play live then Frankenbok are the band for you.

Frankenbok have recently released their fourth full length album "The End Of All You Know" and are embarking on an extensive tour through out Australia, check out here "Frankenbok" for more information.

All in all, is was a good night out. I would like to see Frankenbok in a better line up with more metal bands but as for Frankenbok themselves, they were fantastic live and I urge all metal fans to go and check them out.

short soundwave list

I have been thinking of the best way to describe my soundwave experience but "metal, beer and sunshine" seems a little short.

So I thought I would put a list together of the bands I seen in order,

Chimaira "Severed"

Gojira "The Art Of Dying"

Hellyeah "Hellyeah"

Shadows Fall "The Power Of I And I"

Motionless In White "Abigail"

Limp Bizkit"Hot Dog"

Lamb Of God "Walk With Me In Hell"

Slipknot "Everything Ends"

Machine Head "This Is The End"

Thats pretty much what I saw, there was too much to see and not enough time. I also seen a bit of Mastodon and Messugah.

Masturbation, beer and getting old with Timbok of Frankenbok

Hi Timbok, how are you mate?

I am well and happy in the service of the league of extraordinary bearded gentlemen, thankyou.

For people new to Frankenbok, how you best describe your style of music?

Loud, heavy and it rocks. Hard. We don’t mess around.

How has the metal scene changed in this country since the late 90’s when you started?

Probably have to say there are MORE bands getting around…or at least more bands getting around in cyberspace that may or may not exist in the real world. We are very real. So real that it hurts sometimes…no pain….

What are your thoughts on current world metal scene?

The race is on to be the most sic, heavy and the most heavily endorsed bunch or pierced, tattooed dudes getting around. I don’t know if you heard but Frankenbok quite happily endorses any old piece of shit we can get our hands on. We’ll endorse your couch or lounge room floor for the night if we can too. Your momma’s home cooking? Please! We’ll come back for seconds, thirds and even take a doggy bag for the road. I said we don’t mess around.

Too be honest I get a little tired of the heavy metal scene celebrating the same old shit over and over again. Sometimes I think the difference between a jock strap drinking too much and doing a bunch of macho chest beating and some metal band doing their business…is fuck all, ya know?

What are the plans for 2012?

Grab (b)ass, get in van and get to the gig. Yeah!

You guys are the beard kings of Australian metal! Any advice on how to grow a killer beard?

Yeti says that excessive testosterone (produced by masturbation) can make you go bald. Having said that, a man is capable of growing so much hair everywhere else that all you gotta do is let it go/grow….and don’t forget to wash it. The ladies (and some men) don’t appreciate a smelly beard. Unless you’re Danimal – when he comes close to scream in your face you’ll swear you’re back at the Arthouse at 2am. Beer, cigarettes, brutal.

What is the best thing about being in a band?

It’s nice to have hobbies. I like being around my fellow, bearded cocksmen to make a ruckus and set the world to rights. Fuck everybody, ya know?

Beer or wine?

More anything? More everything! Sometimes anything alcoholic will do.

Krysta Cameron or Megan Massacre?

I must be getting old…I had to Google both those names. Tell you what: Can I try ‘em both and get back to you on that?

What’s the best way for people to find your music?

Listen closely late at night…we make a lot of noise late at night.

You’re probably not going to hear it on the radio or see it on the telly anytime soon.

Youtoobs?

Frankenbok "Dine In Hell"

Any message for the masses?

While you’re sitting around obsessing over what’s happing on the social networking sites and getting hung up on comments from the peanut gallery…real life is handing your ass to you.

Thanks for taking the time to speak to MDA, it much appreciated.

My pleasure.

Slipknot live - my night

You know how sometimes you can go months without seeing a live show? and then all of a sudden ((whack)), there is more to see then your eyes can take in!!

This passed weekend was a little like that, it all started on Wednesday with friends flying in from out of state, many beers were had!! On Thursday we hit the city for lunch and more beers, then off to the hotel to drop our shit off. With only a couple of hours left before Slipknot hit the stage, off to the pub we went to catch up with other friends that were also heading to Slipknot for more beers.

We walked out of the pub to find this old dude in an even older car, with a dodgy sign on the side saying "To Slipknot", so in we get for the trip down.

We skipped Trivium (not really a fan) and hit the box office to see if we could get a ticket upgrade from seating to front standing, the dude was awesome and happily gave us some passes.

This was the third time I had seen Slipknot live and they are fucking insane live, lots of pyrotechnics and they Joey's drum kit on the hydrolics. The only downer from the show was this whiner in front of me that was complaining that the crowd was pushing to much and then his girlfriend started yelling at me, haha, to which I replyed "your in a pit! what did you expect?" and security told me to step back, haha.

After Slipknot had left the stage, I hung around looking for the people I had gone with and noticed Bobby "I'm a bad motherfucker" Tongs at the sound desk packing up, so I yell out "hey Bobby" and he looked up and gave me a wave. I thought "cool" and started walking out, then I heard someone yell out to me so I stopped and turned around and Bobby was running over to me. He shook my hand and gave me a Dime guitar pick!! Awesome!!

We left the venue and walked into the city to get something to eat, after about a km we thought "fuck this, let get a cab", so we hail a cab and get in, told the cabbie where to go and off we went. Just before we arrived at our destination, which was closed, "Bob", who was sitting in the front seat, says to the cabbie "instead of cash, can we pay you in robot?" (random) and starts doing robot noises and movements!! (This would have to be one of the funniest things I have ever seen) and the cabbie replied "No, I don't like this".
Needless to say, this was our "catch phase" for the next few days..........anywhere and everywhere!

Fuck it was a good night, good show, good friends and the next day was Soundwave
