Stone Kings Review
Sorry it has taken me so long to get this together, I guess time is not on my side!
There a plenty of bands out there playing mindless rock with no real soul, these bands are on a get rich quick ride, playing music record labels can move quickly.
Stone Kings however are a band with soul with.........a cool dirty groove, while listening to the album you can hear elements of stoner rock/metal/grunge, bands like Corrosion of Conformity and Velvet Revolver come straight to mind.
Unless you are a hardcore, straight up death metal fan, you will find it hard not to move to the tunes these guys have created, try "Armageddon".
This album would be an awesome driving CD, it's not tuned to low that you have to have it "blarring" it hear it properly and with songs like "Phsycadelic Lady", they would have you pushing the speed limit pretty quick!
As for individual "sounds" in the bands, it's pretty much as Gav describes. The vocalist "Gregg" has a great voice, nice and clean, very soulfull but with buckets of dirt! while "Ryan" and "Gary" on guitars seem to balance each other very well between the rock and blues, try "Free Yourself" and "Take A Drive", "Dom" on bass backs the whole thing up and can obviously play as you can quite clearly him "chugging" away and "Gav" just tops it off on drums!!
This album is of those of us that like to chuck on something a little more mellow and just chill out for a bit.
My picks on the album are "My Punishment", "If She Does" and "Taste Of Heaven" but the hole album is great, I highly recommend everyone go and check these guys out! even if you don't like them, atleast give them a go and if you are lucky enough to get the chance to see Stone Kings live, do it!!! because their music would sound unreal live.
Go to http://www.stonekings.co.uk/ , click on the "music" tab and you can hear teaser for the hole album.

Gav Ranz from Stone KIngs answers some questions
Hey there, this is Gav, I’m the drummer from the UK based band Stone Kings! Glad to be speaking to you Metal Dad!!
Yeah man, I spent a year living in OZ! I was travelling with my wife. I had been in a band for about 8 years & had been working in the same job for about the same amount of time. I got pissed off with the guys I was in the old band with as they just wanted to stay static & thought that fame & fortune would just find them, plus the job I was doing was getting on my nerves & I’d had enough of it all.
My wife & I got married out in OZ in 2006 & really wanted to travel the country as we’d had such a fantastic time so we upped sticks & fucked everything off, got on a plane & had an awesome experience. We did the whole east coast, round the arse end & up through the middle, then back over to the east coast. Unfortunately we never had enough time to do WA but one day we’ll be back... perhaps on tour?!!!
Well you know.. ask anyone who is in a band that isn’t really, really famous & I’m sure they’ll generally find it hard to stick themselves in a box & say ‘‘that’s us’’. I guess though the band has a really good mix of Rock, Metal, Grunge, Stoner Rock and probably anything else you could find that falls in between. Each member of the band has their own piece that makes up our jigsaw.
Myself, I’d describe as a hard rock drummer with a touch of funk. Dom, our bass player has a bit of punk, hard rock & metal in his sound. Ryan who plays rhythm guitar has a classic rock mixed with metal & funk all rolled into every riff that he comes up with. Gary is Stone Kings’ lead guitarist & he has a nu-metal edge but also has an excellent ear to change his sound to whatever we throw in front of him as you’ll probably hear from our album. Gregg, our vocalist has a genius about him when it comes to lyrics. He is the Stoner Rock element in our band more than anyone else & he is also an established indie rapper too. What usually happens in our rehearsals is that when the rest of us are bashing out a new idea & trying to get the structure down, Gregg will go off into another room & he’ll come back & say ‘’guys, I got it’’.... His work rate, lyrically, is something I have never come across before & I think we all feel blessed that our band works so well.
What’s also amazing is that when it comes to egos about our own instruments, there really isn’t any! What I mean by that (I’m sure any musician reading this will understand) is if Gary has an idea about drums or I have an idea about a bass line etc we can all say our bit & give ideas which I think makes it so cool. In other bands we’ve all experienced it where the attitude is ‘‘you stick to playing guitar, I’m the singer’’. Personally I’ve had other experiences where the rest of the band thought they were all drummers (in an old band) & have been totally dictated to about what I can & can’t play which in turn becomes boring & uninspiring. In the end I thought ‘‘why not get a fucking drum machine’’.
As far as influences go, there’s so many! I love anything from The Doors, Pantera, Guns N’ Roses, The Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Mindfunk, System Of A Down... I could carry on all day!!
We’ve been together just over a year! It really is remarkable how quickly we got our shit together. We rehearsed for about 3 months or so & within that time we’d got 14 songs together, 11 of which made the album. There were several songs that had been almost written before I joined the band, but once I became Stone Kings drummer we really chopped & changed things around & also wrote several new songs too. It is still a really productive time for us & we have also written about 5 new songs which are awesome! We play some of the new songs live too which is a good way of getting your fan base familiar with your new stuff too.
The rest of the guys were together through mutual friendships & being in bands together, plus Gregg & Ryan are brothers so they all had connections with each other. I read an ad on joinmyband.com & found this message saying ‘Drummer required’. The message grabbed my attention & I checked out the bands MySpace. They had one really rough demo track on there but I heard the potential straight away. A week later we met up & started jamming in a village hall. The sound was awful & I had not played drums in over a year (I’d just arrived home from OZ) but hearing the riffs here & there of song ideas they had, I was hooked. We smashed that rehearsal sooo hard we actually blew up the PA! No word of a lie. There was this horrible smell like melting plastic & the PA was being pushed so hard as we were all rocking out like madmen... all of a sudden... BZZZZZZZ. It was fucked!
We knew then, at that moment we were a band.
I loved Jim Morrison from The Doors, Axl Rose from Guns N’ Roses for frontmen. Drummers would be Matt Sorum from Velvet Revolver, Nick Menza ex-Megadeth & Lars Ulrich, Metallica.
What was the best show you have ever played?
That is a really hard question! Each show has great memories. One of the last gigs we played was at a huge Biker festival called The Bulldog Bash, which was awesome & we got to hang out with some famous bands like Status Quo & The Damned! If there are people at out gigs having a good time, then we’re happy!
Hmmmm... being in a band, I think I am happy to play any gig. If I am going to a gig, then I prefer to see a famous band in a smaller venue. A couple of years ago I saw Queens Of The Stone Age in a small club in London & it was awesome.
Festivals generally have a cool atmosphere but you always find that with having several stages to choose from, you usually find there’s a crossover of a few bands that you really wanna see.
Stone Kings debut album! Yes, it really is!! Other than that, I have been listening to the new RHCP’s album, Death Magnetic by Metallica, Dropped by Mindfunk &Abnormal by Bumblefoot.
I think I am. I think it’s coz I am a perfectionist, or at least I try to be. Sometimes the other guys are easy to go along with things, but I analyse or over analyse things too much. So whereas I may think ‘It’s annoying’ that whoever doesn’t seem to care about whatever it might be, after all of the analysis I go through, often I can end up with doing what may’ve been done first of all, but I am lucky that no-one is saying ‘I told you so’...
I think that if you don’t explore what it COULD sound like then how did you know you actually made the song the best it could be? Also, we’re not a band that argues too. In my old band there were always arguments because of blinkered views & no experimenting where we could take a song & it sucked. It was verse, chorus, verse etc & everyone kinda knew that the song would be radio friendly & 3 mins 30 secs long!
I have now got to the point in my life where having peace & harmony between the band is far more important than not swallowing your pride. Plus if we have a problem, we discuss things & if we really can’t decide, it goes to a vote. Everyone has their say & everyone is happy that they got to have their say.
My own bad habit can be saying ‘I don’t like it’ too quickly without living with something for a little time, but I am getting better I hope at mulling it over for a while before I decide it’s cool or not.
Vodka and fresh Orange juice. If it’s by the pint or schooner then Cider is my choice., although I have been known to drink Vodka & Orange by the pint too!
Both? Ha ha! Out of both of them, if I only had one seat in my car, it’d be Dita.
The best way is to get your arse to one of our gigs, after that see a band member & buy an album. We have our official home page – www.stonekings.co.uk, our Facebook page – www.facebook.com/stonekingsmusic or our MySpace site – www.myspace.com/stonekingsmusic so no excuses really! We have over 80,000 friends on MySpace with over 1.8 million plays & views.
Our album is on iTunes here - http://itunes.apple.com/gb/artist/stone-kings/id452736005 which was released in August 2011. The physical CD version is due for official release at the end of September.
We decided to release the iTunes version first because track 9, Taste Of Heavens’ proceeds are going to the Australian disaster fund. I have family out in OZ so it was important to me & the band to do something to help all those people who were affected by the fires and floods over the last year or so, plus we kindly got a boost from Guns N’ Roses guitarist Ron ‘Bumblefoot’ Thal who promoted the release on his facebook/twitter pages too. Ron was looking to do something for the charity by way of a guest appearance on an album & he was gonna auction off his services. We got in touch... Unfortunately things didn’t happen as he has an unpredictable schedule but he was kind enough to give us a shout out.
So if you want to do something really awesome then please buy that track off the album as you’ll be helping a great cause.
Thanks for all the support you show us.. will really do appreciate every single one of you.
I would really like to thank Gav for taking the time to talk to metal dad and would also like to give special thanks to Will (Craig) for giving me the "heads up" on these guys.
I hope everyone out there gives them a listen and if you like what you hear....buy the album!!! Let's support the new guys a bit.

What's going on?
I have sent the interview off to Stone Kings and I am hard at work (??) listening to their self titled debut album.
The Interview will hopefully be up on Saturday (Aus time) and the review will quickly follow.
If you are wondering what they sound like check this out (read the information under the clip),
Stone Kings "I want you back"
This is the most mellow song on the album but it has a cool sound to it.

Question?
I get a lot of traffic to my blog but not a lot of comments, don't be scared, say what's on your mind.
If you want to see more of something or would like me to ask different questions to the artists or a particular album reviewed. Just let me know.
But I first need you to comment.
So to break the ice, let me ask you one question! If you were God for one day and could erase anyone from this planet (only one person, I know if you were God you could do whatever) who would it be?

Happy 50th Dave
Haha, I seen a dude walking along (today) wearing a Megadeth shirt with half a pink beard, I gave him the horns but he didn't look (I was driving past).
This would be my favourite Megadeth song (I like Metallica better, sorry, but (shrugs shoulders))
Megadeth "Symphony of Destruction"
Happy birthday Dave.

Pink Floyd "Brain Damage/Eclipse"
And The Cranberries "Zombie" (OK, it's a bit annoying but the album is great)

I have been talking to Gav from Stone Kings (UK) for the past few days (thanks to Will) and they have been kind enough to agree to do an interview and a review of their album.
I have heard a couple song via YouTube and would describe their sound as....well you tell me,

pretty cool, hey, not Behemoth but good chill out music.
More to come.

September 11th
Firstly can I just say that I'am not a trained writer so conveying emotion is something that I'm not real sure on how to do, please read from my point of view of pure amazement.
The time line seems a little off after ten years but I woke on this morning September 12th (Australian time) at around 630-7am and turned on the TV (as normal) to watch the news, and to my absolute amazement I see a buliding smoking and the news replaying the plane crashing into the building and them saying it was a terrorist act.
My first thought was "holy shit, shit is going to hit the fan and it's going to hit REAL hard". Then, another plane and my thoughts turned to my family, my first child turned one in the October after, he and my wife were sleeping still.
Even though the United State of America is a world away from us, Australia and America have had, and still do have a very strong, common conntection and if this kind of thing could happen to the US why could it not happen to Australia, so the thoughts went through my head "should I got to work?" "how can I protect my family?"
All the time the news is replaying the crashes and watching people fall.......and you can't help but watch........... in absolute amazement.
Then, the bulding f^%king fell and not over!! straight down!! and so did the other.......straight f%^king down!!!
And over and over again the news showing replay after replay, until it becomes to much and you have to turn the TV off.
I can not begin to imagine, the terror, the people around the site must have felt, let alone what was going through the minds of the fire fighters, emergency services people and the people in the bulding.
All I can say is, I personally feel great sorrow for all the people involved. The innocent victims in the buildings and their families, all the Emergency Services personnel and their families, all the people on the planes and their families and to never forget the soldiers and their families.
Ten years later, I have two more children, am now married and the world continues but with an ever present ...... unease. We don't walk around in fear but there is always a certain level if distrust and a thought of "what if?", I guess.
As for the war, that is another story. I personally support our soliders 110% and agree that we need a military to protect us times of need but the "act" of war is the craziest thing the human race has thought of (when you think about it literally), behind religion and money.
But where do we stop? Do we leave countries alone and turn a blind eye to acts of terrible, inhumanity? Things get "murky" very quickly and some times thing can turn on you rather quickly.
Just my two cents worth.
September 11, we will never forget.

Spine Extraction Review
This review has taken a little while because I'm really quite lazy when it comes to burning CD's or loading music to my phone so I can play it in the car.
If you have never heard Spine Extraction or unsure of the bands sound then the first twenty seconds of "Abomination" should give you a pretty good insight into what the band is all about.
The album starts with a crushing fury before settling into a solid yet fast riff with Tripp's dark lyics delivered with a brutally, gutteral kick to the head. The band then takes you on ride through all things metal, they can do it all, fast to slow, low growls to high screams, like "Shallow Grave"!
This album has plenty of tempo changes, awesome riffs and lots of well timed blast beats but the best part is a vocalist with great range. I like how bands like this will play slow, HEAVY riffs with slow, low gutteral screams, like "Suppressing The Rage"!
The only thing missing from this album is probably the production, I could only imagine what they would sound like with a production budget the likes of Lamb Of God or Machine Head, not trying to take anything away from the band, it is great album and the guys have real talent. I just hope they keep going, record a new album and get signed, so they can get that production budget they deserve.
The top track from the album would have to be "Eternity Awaits", "Fleshless" and "Suppressing The Rage".
You can buy the album here http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/spineextraction for $9.99 (US), which is $9.39 Australian (good ole Aussie dollar), It's well worth the money!!

The Idea
The whole idea for this blog, FaceBook and Twitter pages was to create some noise for the metal scene prodominantly in Australia but via these avenues I have able to meet metalheads from all over the world which is awesome.
I have done some reviews and interviews with bands from Europe and the US and will be doing more in the future. When I review an album or show I give my honest opinion and when doing interviews the questions are mine and I don't "pump up" the answers, as the bands talk to me, that's how I give it to you. It's all real!!!
If you have a band that needs a bit of promotion, are touring in Australia or just want to share what your doing (keep it metal!), then "like" my facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Metal-dad-australiA/202866413100917 post what you want to share, I'll share it. Or follow me on Twitter http://twitter.com/#!/metaldad_666 , and say hello, I'll follow back.
Let's make some noise!!!

And, if you haven't seen Devildriver live before get out there and see them, they are fantastic, lots of energy, a truly great live band!!

Review :- Chimaira The Age Of Hell
I have been listening to Chimaira's "The Age Of Hell" for the past couple of days and what an album it is, there is that signature "urgent" Chimaira riff and Mark Hunter's angry growls from the opening song.
But from there things change a little with the newer members of the band shine through more, with different tempo riffs and beats and Mark shows more melody than previous albums. The album is full of off tempo pauses and songs that just stop! but I think it works really well at creating an atmosphere that is all Chimaira.
I think Chimaira truley have a unique sound, at a time when alot of heavy metal bands just tune low and f&^king scream (not that I dislike that), Chimaira have been bold enough to use clean vocals, trumpet samples and computer generated effects with awe inspiring guitar work and that trade mark "urgent" brutality, my only worry is that Chimaira don't go down the Fear Factory "Obselete" track and loose their way.
If you like your metal fast and crushing with wicked guitar work Chimaira's "The Age Of Hell" is for you, as it is for me, but if you are a Chimaria fan, as I'am, you would have to agree that "That Age Of Hell" pales in comparison to "Chimaira", but that being said "Chimaira" was a monster of an album and "The Age Of Hell" is a different beast all together.
My picks for top tracks will undoubtebly change the more I listen to the album but as I write this "year of the snake", "beyond the grave" and "born in blood" are the picks, for different reasons, they are really different tracks. I hope to see Chimaira in Australia late this or early next year and see the crowd react to "born in blood" around the two minute mark.
Head over to Chimaira's facebook page and demand they come to Australia, let's make some noise and get some good metal bands here or go here for more info http://www.chimaira.com/ .
This is a definate candidate for metal album of the year!!!!!!!! so check it out.

What's going on?
I'm currently listening to Spine Extraction's self titled debut. It's crushing, blackened, death metal from a relatively new US band with a very promising future.
I have also finally got a copy of Chimaira's "The Age Of Hell", no need to introduce these metal veterans, let's just say their are a few surprises on this album.
As with most other metal fans out there, I too am eagerly awaiting "Unto The Locust" from Machine Head, also still waiting on Motionless In White and a few other bands I have been in contact with.
So plenty of reviews, some interviews and hopefully a show or two to be seen.
Stay tuned.

Anselmo Double Shot
I think the greatest front man in metal!!!!
The first clip, love it or hate it, I like Superjoint Ritual. Was it worth spliting up Pantera??? Hell no!! but they rocked the f%^k out, just in a different way so it was hard for Pantera fans to listen to.
If you have never heard them, check them out but don't get to excited though because Super Joint Ritual are done!
Super Joint Ritual "Waiting for the turning point"
The second clip is a different approach again, very mellow but one of my favourites. Everyone has heard Down before, well atleast from my generation.
Down "where I'm going"
From all reports Phil Anselmo sounds like he is back in a good way, just check out YouTube for clips of him from the current Down tour, looks very promising and I for one hope they come to Australia on this tour cycle.
Any how, enjoy, I'll have a beer for ya!

Spine Extraction
Spine Extraction have their album available for download here https://www.cdbaby.com/cd/spineextraction for only $9.99.
It's the first time I have used this site to dowload music, it took about two minutes to get an email confirmation and about the same to download the album, so far so good.
The album is as you would expect, brutally "Spine Extraction"!!!, full review coming.
Stay tuned.
