I have been listening to Chimaira's "The Age Of Hell" for the past couple of days and what an album it is, there is that signature "urgent" Chimaira riff and Mark Hunter's angry growls from the opening song.
But from there things change a little with the newer members of the band shine through more, with different tempo riffs and beats and Mark shows more melody than previous albums. The album is full of off tempo pauses and songs that just stop! but I think it works really well at creating an atmosphere that is all Chimaira.
I think Chimaira truley have a unique sound, at a time when alot of heavy metal bands just tune low and f&^king scream (not that I dislike that), Chimaira have been bold enough to use clean vocals, trumpet samples and computer generated effects with awe inspiring guitar work and that trade mark "urgent" brutality, my only worry is that Chimaira don't go down the Fear Factory "Obselete" track and loose their way.
If you like your metal fast and crushing with wicked guitar work Chimaira's "The Age Of Hell" is for you, as it is for me, but if you are a Chimaria fan, as I'am, you would have to agree that "That Age Of Hell" pales in comparison to "Chimaira", but that being said "Chimaira" was a monster of an album and "The Age Of Hell" is a different beast all together.
My picks for top tracks will undoubtebly change the more I listen to the album but as I write this "year of the snake", "beyond the grave" and "born in blood" are the picks, for different reasons, they are really different tracks. I hope to see Chimaira in Australia late this or early next year and see the crowd react to "born in blood" around the two minute mark.
Head over to Chimaira's facebook page and demand they come to Australia, let's make some noise and get some good metal bands here or go here for more info http://www.chimaira.com/ .
This is a definate candidate for metal album of the year!!!!!!!! so check it out.
